Avalon Hotel is proud to highlight a special exhibition that honors the legacy of Elsa Pärs-Berglund, a pioneering textile artist whose work was deeply rooted in the political and social movements of the second half of the 20th century. With unparalleled skill in weaving techniques such as double weave, damask, and dukagång, Pärs-Berglund used her art to explore and comment on the most pressing issues of her time – from political events and global injustices to environmental issues and the Swedish class struggle.
In conjunction with this historical review, the exhibition presents works by two contemporary designers, Shabnam Faraee and Josefin Gäfvert, who both honor and challenge Pärs-Berglund’s legacy. Faraee’s hand-knotted rug, “Seven Kinds of Flowers,” is a tribute to Sweden’s biological diversity and a journey through Iran’s rich craft traditions. Gäfvert, on the other hand, experiments with the art of weaving as an aesthetic expression with great humor, and her five weavings create a dialogue with Pärs-Berglund’s historical works.
Avalon Hotel looks forward to welcoming guests and visitors to this inspiring exhibition, which is not only a tribute to one of Gothenburg’s own artists but also a platform for contemporary creators to explore the boundaries of textile media. By bringing together the past and present, this exhibition offers a unique insight into the powerful language of weaving and its continued relevance in today’s society.
READ MOREIn conjunction with Gothenburg’s grand 400th anniversary, a multitude of creative proposals emerged from the city’s residents on how the celebration could be depicted. Among these ideas, the concept of sharing personal stories and reflections on life in the city led to the initiative “Gothenburg Tells.”
Already in 2018, the City Museum embarked on an ambitious project where 100 Gothenburgers from diverse backgrounds, ages, professions, and districts were interviewed to capture the city’s multifaceted soul. These personal portrayals were visually enhanced through photographer Stefan Edetoft’s portraits, taken in environments that the interviewees themselves chose as meaningful to them.
The result of this work is a comprehensive documentation that not only preserves a piece of Gothenburg’s history for future generations but also offers insight into the city’s soul at a milestone in its history. The exhibition “Gothenburg Tells” gives voice to the Gothenburgers’ thoughts and feelings about their city, where they share both the challenges and problems they’ve experienced as well as their deep love for Gothenburg.
At Avalon, we have the daily opportunity to interact with both Gothenburgers and visitors. This exhibition highlights the rich diversity and unity that make Gothenburg a city we are proud to call our home. We encourage all our guests to partake in these stories and be inspired by the community and history that shape our city.
